New Man at the top...
Sunday, January 3rd 2010, the MFL as we know it ceased to exist, what happened on this day was nothing short of biblical... "What he means is Old Testament, Mr. (Commisioner), real wrath-of-God type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the sky! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice. Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!" (Ghostbusters 1984). Despite his 1 year hiatus in 2005 when a young upstart grabbed away his title, the MFL Championship has always been dominated by one man ; James Cooper. Cooper and his Sheffield Supermen have stood tall over the rest of the MFL for 3 long years, fighting off the Eagles and Beanskin in 2006, laying waste to the Warriors challenge in 2007, and escaping an assination attempt from Cashs side in 2008. Throughout all those years there was a team that consistantly improved and continually challenged - and finally all the hard work, sweat and tears paid off, as in 2009 the MFL ushered in a new era, the age of the Heroes.
Richard Howard held the lead from week 12, where in the process of defeating their closest rivals, the English Eagles in the MFL Knockout semi finals, he also took over the Eagles and assumed top spot in the MFL Championship. There he stayed and with the final week 17 looming the Eagles needed to overhaul a 19 point lead held by the Heroes. It was infact the closest finish to an MFL season in history and the tension in the build up was notable. With the Supermen and Big Boiz ready to pounce if the Eagles and Heroes both slipped up, the stage was set for a titanic battle. Unfortunately for the Eagles, when the teams were announced Butcher had selected 4 players that were also in the Heroes side, and thus from the start the Eagles chances were decreased. Roethlisbergers fantastic first half for the Eagles coupled with Shaubs desperate start for the Heroes kept it interesting for a while, but as Shaub rallied in the second half, the Eagles chances of a first Hometeam title were destroyed. Richard was it seemed in inspired form, spending just 9points on Aromashodu, the Bears wide receiver racked up 2 touchdown receptions for 16 points hammering the final nail in the Eagles coffin. Niether the Supermen or the Boiz could muster much more of a challenge, and in the late hours of Sunday morning the Heroes were cantering to an historic victory, finally securing a 42 point championship winning lead, and the Peyton Manning trophy.
